“Inside Out,” set in the 1980s, playfully focuses on six women who are participating in group therapy. That’s right, group therapy, with issues that remain germane today.
The therapy group of “Inside Out”’ is made up of Therapist Grace (Cynthia Ferrer) whose sensitive guidance, role play exercises and support helps to provide breakthroughs for her clients. Liz (Sandy Bainum) is a high powered businesswoman, mother and wife to an aspiring Chef house-husband who wants more of her time. Sage (Adrienne Visnic) is a naïve flower child who views the world through rose colored glasses and leaves her life decisions to the stars and tarot cards. Chlo (Stephanie Fredricks) is a sarcastic, innocently flirtatious lesbian and single parent of a teen son who romantically lonely. Molly (Dana Miller) is an apologetic housewife, whose diminished self-esteem and body image makes it difficult for her to stand up for herself. And finally Dena (Leslie Stevens,) the group’s newest member, is an aging pop-star whose confidence and pride have limited her career options and ability to get out of her own way. These women are relatable real people.
Impeccably intertwined the stories of these women’s support and understanding for one another are beautifully conveyed through dialogue and of course musical numbers capturing and enhancing their special moments. “Thin” led by Molly (Dana Meller) and “Yo Chlo” rap by Dena (Leslie Stevens) and Company were met with joy and belly laughs from the audience. Revelation songs like “I Don’t Say Anything” by Sage (Adrienne Visnic) and “Never Enough” by Chlo (Stephanie Fredricks) brought the house down. There is no deficit of musical numbers and characters to please and relate to.
Unforgettable music by Adryan Russ, perceptive lyrics by Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ and book by Doug Haverty make this impressive collaboration exquisite!
Hitting every note, musically and emotionally, this grand cast of women is made up of an undeniably superb ensemble of talented artists. Sandy, Cynthia, Stephanie, Dana, Meller, Leslie and Adrienne, thank you for a wonderful night of musical theatre.
