MAYOR ANTONIO R. VILLARAIGOSA, WELLS FARGO, THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH COMMITTEE, THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS, AND OTHER SPONSORS INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2013 AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH POSTER COMPETITIO
Contest Theme: “Continuing the Dream: African Americans at the Crossroad of Freedom and Equality”
Contest participation requires the creation of an original artwork, by selecting a pioneer from the suggested list below. In your art work depict the impact your selected “pioneer” had on history and/or your everyday life:
Arthur Ashe, Barbara Jordan, Benjamin Banneker, Biddy Mason, Charles Richard Drew, Daniel Hale Williams, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Frederick Douglass, Harry Belafonte, Jesse Owens, Josephine Baker, Mae Jemison, Marian Anderson, Shirley Chisolm, Thurgood Marshall, Virginia Hamilton, W.E.B Du Bois, Wendell Scott
- Judging based on originality, creativity, and interpretation of the African American Heritage Month contest theme. All work must be original.
· Open to all students in grades K-12 within Los Angeles County.
· One entry allowed per student
· Medium can be watercolor, acrylic, oil, pen, pencil, chalk, or marker on paper, canvas, or wood.
· Artwork must be two-dimensional and must not exceed 18” x 24”
· Student’s signature should be at the bottom right corner of the artwork
Deadline: Friday, February 8, 2013 by 6:00 p.m.
Early entry submissions are encouraged
Entry must include the following participant’s information typed on a sheet of paper taped to the back of the work:
1. Student’s Grade Level
2. Student’s Full Name, Home Mailing Address, Parent’s Home or Mobile Telephone Number
3. School / Organization’s Name and Address
4. Teacher’s Full Name, Telephone Number, and Email Address
5. Title of Work, Medium, and Sentence About Inspiration or Description of the Depicted Work

Competition Winners
Prizes include premium art supplies. There are six divisions in the contest with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners selected from each division. There will be one Best in Show Grand Prize:
I. Grades K - 1st
II. Grades 2nd - 3rd
III. Grades 4th - 5th
IV. Grades 6th - 8th
V. Grades 9th - 10th
VI. Grades 11th - 12th
The winners will be notified after February 18, 2013. The Awards Ceremony is tentatively scheduled for February 27, 2013. All entries, including the winners’ work, become the property of the City of Los Angeles & Wells Fargo. The City and Wells Fargo have the right to reproduce or publish the artwork in any medium for current or future use in educational materials and programs. Selection of winners by the judging panel is final.
