Theatre Review - The Western Unscripted,
Impro Theatre, The Falcon Theatre, Burbank
“Impro Theatre saddles up and rides headlong into the dangerous high chaparral of places like Tombstone and Deadwood. A full-length play in the style of the great film westerns of John Ford and Howard Hawks. Complete with cattle barons, sheriffs, saloon girls, and sidewinders, Impro Theatre manifests destiny in every show!"
Well I’ve seen some improv in my day I can tell you, but the Impro Theatre Company’s ‘The Western Unscripted’ really takes the cake! Directed by Dan O’Connor & Stephen Kearin, a full length play is created before our very eyes, complete with complex characters, intricate plot twists and love found and lost!
It does help that they have a spectacular set, and some iconic Western music to help set the mood, but the extraordinary talents of these improvisational actors are hard to match, and haven’t been by any improv group I have seen in LA thus far.
The basic premise is simple enough. Create the atmosphere of an old Hollywood Western, with the help of stage, sets and music. Ask the audience for some distinct characters, major plot beats and off we go!
The team of actors have clearly worked together many times before, and they rotate roles, and actors throughout the run of the show. What actors are off stage, not in the scene we are watching, stand at the side of the stage, watching with us as the story unfolds and adding hilarious sound effects to enhance the action.
The stories are straight out of classic Westerns like Tombstone and Deadwood, complete with cattle barons, sheriffs, saloon girls and sidewinders.
I was so impressed with every single actor, it’s hard to pick any one performance out for a mention, so I won’t. Suffice it to say that everyone was perfect, funny, and obviously having the time of their lives!
This is definitely not one to miss, I highly recommend it and can’t wait for one of their other productions such as Shakespeare unscripted, or Dickens or any of the many versions of this fantastic formula the Impro Theatre cooks up throughout the year.
