NoHo Does Poetry – Meet Jessica Wilson
The NoHo Arts District dot Com team always strives to showcase the work of our local NoHo arts community and to celebrate national holidays and designations that promote the arts. April is National Poetry Month and we’d like to introduce North Hollywood to one of our local poets, Jessica Wilson.

When did you realize you loved poetry?
When I was 13 and created my first poem. It was amazing!
How did you get started?
There were a few opportunities in middle school to become involved with a city wide literary competition. I won an Honorable Recognition in 8th grade. It motivated me! I was also in Poetry journal put together by the city, I think, and it was at this reading when I was first introduce to the Beat Poets. That opened the door to my journey with poetry!
What is it that you enjoy about poetry?
The entire process! From flowing with a stream in your head, to paper, to realizing that you've created something tangible and expressive. It's freeing! Your words are as honest as the moment you wrote them in. No matter how distant the poem... you can always reclaim the feelings, mood, and tone that went through you when you wrote it. It's an amazing way to reconnect to the moments you lived.
What’s coming up next?
I was recently at Gatsby Books for the Launch Party for the Revolutionary Poets Brigade Anthology - Los Angeles! I have two poems in the book and I am very excited and honored to be a part of the collection. The show starts at 7pm. The anthology is such a strong collection of today's voices on social issues and happenings. Books will be available for sale and signing!
SoapBox Poets Open Mic, which I host at Beyond Baroque at 681 Venice Blvd. in Venice, it goes every 2nd Sunday at Beyond Baroque. The show begins at 2pm to 4pm and we are excited to host Poet, John Martinez!
Writer Wednesday is every Wednesday night at Bob's Espresso Bar from 7- 9:30pm -- the home of Creative Community in North Hollywood! We open our mic to all creative genres! Come on down because the list fills fast.
One thing you would like to add…
I want to thank the community of North Hollywood for embracing Writer Wednesdays at Bob's Espresso Bar and creating such a beautiful masterpiece with your art! You MAKE this happen! Write on!
