The NoHo Artist Village a place by and for local artists.

Have you been to the NoHo Farmers Market? It is a jewel for North Hollywood residents to have their very own fresh, local food market on Saturdays. Well, this is NoHo afterall. So it doesn’t stop there. Local artist Alexandra Kube tells NoHo Arts District dot com readers about how the Artist Village became a part of the NoHo Farmers Market.

Alexandra Kube artist villageIt all started with a booth at the North Hollywood Farmers Market about two years ago. I had been attending art festivals all over the southwest selling my paintings. When the NoHo farmers market popped up, I decided to give it a whirl in my own neighborhood, (now The Arts District) that I’ve been a residence of for 30 years. Yes, there have been sales, but more interesting, inquiries from other local artists on how to get a space to sell their artwork.

After speaking with Eddie, the market manager, we decided to welcome more artists to the market. That’s when I gave it a name and organized the hows, whys and what. This can all be found at www.nohomarket.org >Artist Village page, including an application form. Please find us on Facebook also for daily posts from some of the artists. Participating Artists page http://alexkube.wix.com/noho-artists-village#!participating-artists/c1ger shows some samples of what you’ll see at the Artist Village on any given Saturday.

The Artist Village (AV) is defined as a branch of the farmers market devoted to local fine art. In contrast to a space in an Art Festival costing the artist anywhere from $250.00 to $650.00, we are not in the business of making money off the artists, but rather encouraging artists to get their work out there and take advantage of the weekly community gathering. The AV charges a one-time $25.00 registration fee, and then 15% of sales thereafter (all going back to the farmers market for providing the space, permits etc). There are of course some requirements; a decent display, artists representing their own work, CA sales tax permit and the work must be original. We don’t want to see mass manufactured or copied work. Think of it in terms of an open-air casual gallery.

The AV has ebbed and flowed in size over the past two years, but interest seems to be picking up. This is a great place to look around if you appreciate original artwork and like meeting the artists.

Most Saturdays you will find actual painting going on and our artists are always encouraging to young (and old) aspiring artists. Events such as lessons, demos and special themed shows have been scheduled in the past. We hope to have more going forward.

More on the NoHo Farmers Market

The NoHo Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 10AM-3PM. It’s located at 5200 Bakman between Weddington and Chandler with free parking and conveniently located just steps away from the North Hollywood Metro stops.

The NoHo Farmers Market is an open-air street market with approximately 12 farmers, 10 local artisans, and 20 vendors who provide baked goods and prepared foods. The NoHo Market also hosts and Artist Village, live music as well as local nonprofit community organizations and free special events for the community. They are Certified Farmers Market. California Certified Farmers Markets are the real thing—they are places where genuine farmers sell fruits, nuts, and vegetables directly to the public. Every farmer who sells at a Certified Market is inspected by the county agricultural commissioner to make sure he/she actually grows the commodity being sold. The NoHo Market takes pride in its status as a California Certified Farmers Market because it allows our customers to know that they are receiving quality, locally-grown products.
