Laid out for us with the grace of an artist. But don’t be fooled, these songs aren’t what you might expect from a sitar wielding musician. They are bold and extravagant, a twist of cultures and peppered with drama…kind of like a James Bond theme, but on a sitar.
Mohamed Assani, a multi award-winning and much celebrated musician is based in BC, Canada and recorded these tracks in the wee hours, in remote studios hidden amongst the forest and wilderness of the Canadian interior. You can almost hear the wolves howling and the cougars growling.
It’s a gorgeous album. A revelation to those of us who don’t usually listen to sitar music. It’s epically written, with influences from every part of the globe. It’s heartfelt and authentic and deeply emotional. But modern and accessible and exceedingly, if very gently, powerful.
With tracks with names such as “Awakening,” Serendipity” and “Lullaby for Guli,” this music is clearly a deeply felt conversation for Assani. There’s a longing in the music. It sounds like memory and dreams and imaginings. It's a vivid water color of an album. So monumentally visual and sensual…it gets in your head…in a really, really good way.
Even if you have never wandered into the “world music” section of the musical arena or, perhaps because of that, you should give this beautiful and innovative record a listen. I guarantee you will be happily surprised. After all, the sitar sings notes our western ears aren’t at all accustomed to, which is exactly what we all need isn’t it?
