The Group Rep presents BARRYMORE - One more great evening Upstairs at the Group Rep

John Barrymore, once a stage and screen idol, has been rehearsing for his hopeful comeback and revival of his epic 1920 role as RICHARD III on Broadway.  BARRYMORE, directed by and starring Robert Benedict, is a comedy of the declining ability of an aging actor, and a life too-well lived. 

Now it is 1942 and just months before his death.  BARRYMORE, portrayed by Robert Benedict, reminisces about good and questionable periods of his life, loves, and career, always with a drink in his hand, and most of the time stumbling across his room trying to remember his lines in the play calling out to Frank (Todd Andrew Ball) his stage manager for his next line.  We hear Frank, but don’t see him as he tries to make BARRYMORE focus to get him back on track.  Naughty jokes abound and Benedict gives us a bittersweet portrait of this once famous actor with excellence.  John Barrymore came from stage and screen royalty with Sister Ethel Barrymore and Brother Lionel Barrymore just as, or more famous than John. This once great actor is now realizing his decline.  He knows how important his performance is.  Will he be able to give his best?

Robert Benedict also directs with clarity, Todd Andrew Ball produces.  One more great evening Upstairs at the Group  Rep.  Enjoy this look into one of America’s greatest actors in the NoHoArts District.
