HEALTH, HAPPINESS & THE PURSUIT OF SOCIAL INTERACTION

Here’s something important that we probably don’t think about as much as we should: how much “alone time” do we really need in our lives?

Sure - we all enjoy curling up on the couch with a good book, or even watching a marathon of our favorite TV shows all by our lonesome once in a while.

But what happens when “once in a while” turns into “always”?

The fact is, many people don’t realize how having an “empty nest” can affect our health - both mentally and physically.

Take it from the experts - studies show that social isolation can increase the risk of health issues, from mood disorders (like depression), to stress-related chronic conditions (like heart disease).

So, what’s the easy answer? Find a way to get involved.

Sure, it sounds simple. How many classes and groups and organizations are there to join? Today there are groups for every interest, from dancing to flying kites. The truth is, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming.

But the fact is, if we bravely go where many have gone before (into social interaction, that is), we’ll thank ourselves for it later.

One of our residents at the NOHO Senior Arts Colony apartment community for adults age 62+ recently shared her experience with us on this subject:

“When I moved to North Hollywood from Chicago, I have to admit I was a bit afraid. It was a little like being the ‘new kid’ at school all over again, and for a moment that all-too-familiar feeling of wanting to keep to myself tried to creep in.

Luckily, I decided to ignore that and forge ahead into this artistic community.

Today, I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time. I started a poetry group here with several fellow residents, and we’ve put on professional productions to share our work. By becoming involved, I’m not only sharing my talents, but I’ve made dear friends who enrich my life each day.”

So, here’s the bottom line: Research shows that people over 60 who are active in their community enjoy better health, and are able to make and grow more friendships. Plus, by keeping active and trying new things, we can keep our bodies and minds sharp.

So get out there and find a social group to join today - you’ll be glad you did!
