With a beautiful, warm, xylophone-esque hook of an opening, “Closer Look” is classic techno pop with a lot of deep, deep echoing love from the cream of 80’s pop - Japan, Human League, Thomas Dolby, XTC, Duran Duran.
Post Punk provocateur Les Techno has the solid background legendary musicians. He’s bounced around, playing with genres, experimenting with recording techniques and inventing sounds. He’s worked with some of the biggest influencers of the last several decades like Run DMC, Mobb Deep and Ava Cherry, and has even remixed Red Hot Chili Peppers. His schizophrenic musical background only lends his cool clear love lament “Closer Look” all the more credence. The howling guitar pushes unapologetically against the Tron-like cords piercing through the track with its tingling and urgent pining, popping, rhythm.
Les Techno’s “Closer Look” is reverentially retro in an almost accidental way. You feel like Les is just making the music he wants, using the references and the memories and the urges that are unique to his own lifetime of experience. Basically, this is a track that only Les Techno could make. It’s pure pop, pure tech, pure color and melodic bass. The arrangement fills the room but still gives everything in it the space it needs to shine. His vocals as uncontrived as the purest 80’s angst, the lyrics telling cinematic stories of heartache and unrequited love.
“Closer Look” is old style New Wave, cool and clever without all that “let me relate to you” crap. It sticks in your head like the best kind of jangly movie soundtrack…in a good way. You need to drive some wet city streets late at night looking for trouble to fully appreciate this track…and I may just do that! Loved it.
