Social and Leisure Activities for the Elderly
Social and Leisure Activities for the Elderly

Just because you’re older, doesn’t mean that you have to stay at home all day and do nothing. There are lots of activities out there that lend themselves well to the older lifestyle, so there’s no need to run a marathon to have fun.

If you want to reconnect with the community, there are lots of hobbies and classes out there to get involved with. Clubs are brilliant if you want to find a new hobby or simply connect with others who share the same interests. This can be almost anything; knitting, walking, gardening or just a social group.

Bingo halls are great places to connect with others too and even win some cash too! If you can’t get out of the house or find it hard to travel then playing online can be a good place to start. There are communities and social groups with online bingo and if you want to try it out for free then have a look at no deposit bingo sites like those on bingosweets.com.

Though some conditions might prevent you from doing Zumba, local gyms usually also have low impact classes. This helps to keep you feeling healthy and you’ll see the same groups of people each week. Water aerobics are recommended for older people and those recovering from surgeries as it takes the strain off the body for the duration of the class.

As an older person it can also be exciting to learn a new skill, even if it is just to show it off to the grandkids. Universities, colleges and libraries usually offer vocational courses that are open to those of all ages. These can equip you with the skills to use computers, talk in another language or make jewellery and it’s a social experience too.

If you take pride in your local area then joining a Residents Association can help you cultivate a great neighbourhood. Greet new neighbours and invite them to all of the classes that you’ve been attending to make the best first impression.

Adopting a pet can make your life vastly more fun and can bring you lots of companionship. Head to your local animal centre to meet different dogs and cats to suit your lifestyle. The staff in these centres can tell you which animals would best suit your home and activity levels.

Volunteering can also be really rewarding and can make a difference for those in need in the community. Churches, schools and charitable associations are always looking for those who want to give them a helping hand and you can do so at your own pace. Charity shops can also give you the chance to pick up a short shift here and there.
